The BWABC Literacy Association is a nonprofit (501)c3 organization founded by author and literary consultant Shelia E. Bell. The mission of the BWABC Literacy Association is to promote, advance, and improve literacy in the Memphis statistical area and reduce the rate of illiteracy among youth and young adults through targeting communities with the highest illiteracy rates. The BWABC incorporates and utilizes a number of programs, such as workshops, festivals, conferences, reading and writing activities, 5K walks/runs and several other programs to bring awareness to the illiteracy epidemic and to raise funds to support our mission. The BWABC Literacy Association continually welcomes and relies on partnerships with book clubs, authors, schools, businesses, individuals and the community.

BWABC Literacy Rocks! Programs & Events
BWABC Literacy Association partners with private and public schools and churches to promote literacy. Here are some of the things the association participates in and/or spearheads:

Annual BWABC Literacy Festival
The Black Writers And Book Clubs (BWABC) Literacy Association holds an annual Literacy Festival the third weekend in September which is National Literacy Month. This FREE festival features over 100 talented and gifted authors who travel to Memphis from across the country. Authors showcase their books, participate in panel discussions, literacy workshops, interact with attendees and share their professional expertise in an effort to support and promote literacy one community at a time.

The BWABC Literacy Festival is the perfect place to network with authors, book clubs, avid readers, and people from across the nation who are concerned about literacy.
The festival includes a Book Marketplace, Purple Carpet Reception, Author Readings, Entertainment, Door Prizes, Book Club Panel Discussions, Literary Roundtable Symposium, Kids Corner, BWABC Literacy Rocks! Awards, Literacy Game Show, Children and Young Adult Book Marketplace, BWABC Young Author Contest, and much more!

Annual BWABC Literacy Rocks! Author of the Year
This award is presented annually to the female and male author who has a proven track record of promoting literacy within their city/state/town and/or literary travels.

Annual BWABC Literacy Rocks! Book Club Awards
The BWABC Literacy Association unites with book clubs locally and across the country in an ongoing effort to promote literacy one community at a time. Book clubs facilitate workshops, engage with the authors and work closely throughout the year with the BWABC Literacy Association. During the annual BWABC Literacy Festival winning book clubs are presented with BWABC Literacy Rocks! Awards in the following categories:
